Compare the green-winged teals

Published 9:03 am Friday, January 24, 2020

For the past couple of weeks, there has been a Eurasian green-winged teal near the North Pond photo blind on Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge. The Eurasian is rare in the area. The American teal (top) and the Eurasian (bottom) are pictured here for comparison. Note the vertical stripe on the American teal and the horizontal white stripe on the Eurasian. In the overall duck family, green-winged teals are relatively small. They feed mostly on submerged aquatic vegetation.
