First responders on the scene of propane tank leak in Wanchese

Roanoke Island Volunteer Fire Department responded to a propane leak on a 30,000 gallon tank in Wanchese just before 7 a.m. Monday, February 24. The tank is located at Ferrellgas, near Duck Thru and Village Hardware.

Ferrellgas employees worked to seal the leak with support from RIVFD. Dare EMS and Fire Marshal Steve Kovacs had also been on the scene.

Kill Devil Hills Deputy Fire Chief Frank Roepcke brought some wooden dowels that function as plugs and Eastern Tree Service provided use of their lift.

RIVFD was in contact with the state hazmat team in Williamston for advice.

The leak has now been sealed and crews have cleared the scene.
