The American kestrel (Falco sparverius), as seen here on Alligator River Refuge, is the smallest North American falcon. Like jays, nuthatches and chickadees, the American kestrel hides away surplus food, such as insects and small animal kills in caches to be used during times when food sources are not readily available.
