Thirty of Ab and Irlene Wescott’s descendants met at McDonald’s in Manteo recently to uphold a longstanding family tradition. Realizing the family had become so large, Ab and Irlene began meeting family members every Wednesday morning at McDonald’s for breakfast. Everyone was invited.

Ab, or Old Grand Dad as he was called, always treated anyone who showed up to breakfast on him. This time together became such a tradition that one great-grandchild actually thought that Old Grand Dad and Mom Mom owned and lived at McDonald’s.

The family enjoyed a great time together. Many stories and remembrances were shared.  The oldest descendant was Merle W. Daniels at 82, while the youngest was baby Eb Meekins at two months old.

This year, the family decided to take up a collection in the memory of Ab and Irlene, who always loved giving back to their community. When all was said and done, the family members had contributed $340 and it was decided to donate that amount to the Roanoke Island Volunteer Fire Department.

“Great time and even a donation to great cause,” stated Lou Ellen Daniels Quinn. “Thinking the two who started it all just may have been looking down on that little McDonald’s in Manteo, with warm smiles on their faces. And rightfully so.
