Around 12:45 p.m. on Saturday, March 21, the Kill Devil Hills Fire Department responded to a call in the 400 block of W. Chowan St. in Kill Devil Hills. The fire started on the side deck of the residence.

Two women were walking by on the parallel street – W. Sothel – when they saw smoke rising from the deck.

Michael MacLean, who also lives on W. Chowan, said one of the women called 911 and after seeing a car in the driveway, the two went to the door and alerted the resident that his deck was on fire.

MacLean also mentioned that the resident was concerned about his pet bird, “so the one lady took his bird and put it in the front seat of his car.”

Fire departments from Colington and Kitty Hawk as well as the Kill Devil Hills Police Department and Dare EMS were also on scene. No injuries occurred.

According to Kill Devil Hills Fire Chief Troy Tilley, the fire was extinguished quickly after fire crew arrived on scene and the fire marshal was on scene to conduct an investigation.

A KDHFD press release stated the fire was contained to the side of the structure on the first floor deck and siding.
