Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

By Mike Caton

John 5:1, Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish festivals.

Verses like this give me much to think about. How much time did Jesus spend in Cana before he went up to Jerusalem? What did he do while he was there? Who did he talk to? What did he teach? Did the folks believe him? What miracles did he do? The questions just keep on coming.

But then I turn the questions back to myself. What am I doing during this time? And that is particularly a pertinent question now, with much of the world under a stay at home order. It would be easy to do nothing, to lay around and watch TV, snack all day, worry about the situation of the world. There is even a temptation to do things we ought not to do, there are things on the TV and the internet we have no business exploring.

But there is no doubt Jesus didn’t waste his time there in Cana, and there is no need for us to waste our time either. Think about the projects you always wanted to do, but just didn’t have time for. Think about the thing you have been putting off. We have the opportunity to spend more time with our family. We have more time to spend with our God. And consider all of those essential folks, who are trying to get the things done that will keep our society running. We need to pray for and support them in whatever ways we can. When you think about it, this ought to be a very productive season of our life.

Father, help me spend my time in ways that matter. In Jesus’ name, amen.
