Tucked away on Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge, two great horned owlets (Bubo virginianus) wait for the return of a parent and a meal. Their widely varied diet consists mainly of birds and mammals, but they also eat rodents, fish, insects, reptiles, carrion and invertebrates. Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge is one of nine national wildlife refuges in the Coastal North Carolina National Wildlife Refuges Complex.
