On April 13, the College of The Albemarle announced that campuses will be open to the public on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mondays and Fridays, campuses will remain closed.

A release from COA stated: “. . . the amount of physical traffic on campus has slowed considerably since the college moved to online instruction. By moving to a schedule of three days per week, the college can better utilize its personnel to make critical resources available to students when they most need it.”

Jenna Hatfield, COA’s public information officer, assured that staff are still available via phone, email, virtual meetings and appointments on days in which the campuses are physically closed.

Hatfield also relayed that the second annual COA Literary Festival will be held virtually on April 30 from 1 to 3:30 p.m.

“The plan was to have an in-person festival on April 9,” Hatfield said. After canceling that event due to the large group of people that would attend, Hatfield said that Dr. Joshua Howell decided to offer a virtual event instead.

“This event is sure to be unique to the COA community, but we love being able to provide our students with the opportunity to engage an event safely,” Howell said.

The literary festival will be shared via Zoom. Hatfield said Zoom can host up to 300 participants and provides a platform to engage a large audience.

The festival will begin with introductions from Howell, followed by two writing workshop and a performance by Ryan Clemens called “Mark Twain Storytelling.”

The press release from COA stated that Clemens is an actor, director, playwright and teacher who is best known for his one-man show “Meet Mark Twain.”

After the performance, participants will be able to engage in a question and answer session with Clemens.

The festival will conclude with readings from COA’s literary and visual arts annual publication “Estuaries.” For a full itinerary of events and to join to festival on April 30, visit www.albemarle.edu/litfest.
