The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous man runs into it and is safe. – Proverbs 18:10 ESV

I love taking my camera to photograph marinas and docks. The variety of boats that are moored are so interesting. Charter boats, fishing boats, pleasure boats and more. And not to forget the sailboats, too. It is a place at sunrise or sunset to capture the light on these vessels in a particular way that casts a glow, if just for a few minutes. Some vessels are docked permanently and others come for a night or two before moving on. The dock provides safety and shelter for as long as needed. And then the vessel returns to the waters where there are swells and storms and wind that balances out the smooth sailing and sunny days that every mariner enjoys.

As a community, most of us have sheltered in place and “docked” at home for a good period of time now. We have had some rest, exercise, time with family when possible, a chance to finish the book, attempt some gardening and more. We’ve had time to deeply pray and time to reflect and sort out our thoughts.  As days and weeks go by we are closer to resuming a bit of normalcy in our life and that is worth looking forward to. I can’t wait to give my family big hugs in person! But like a good mariner, you never leave the dock without a plan, a map, a compass. We should be mindful of how God wants us to spend our days going forward. Things may be different and challenging. But all we do should be to his glory.  Like the mariner, we have tools too. The Good Book, God’s Promises, His Wisdom and Guidance. He’ll take us forward on a good path if we follow Him. He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust. – Psalm 91:1-2 ESV

Betsy Ore Glass has long-standing ties to the Outer Banks. From Virginia Beach, her family bought a vacation cottage in the 60s and her love of the area began. Later in the 90s, Betsy and her husband bought a weekend cottage and introduced the area to their children. Then Betsy’s parents retired to KDH where the family gathered often.
