Shorebirds have started nesting on the beaches of Cape Hatteras National Seashore.
American oystercatchers have already created 18 nests, 16 of which are active. Two nests are at Cape Point. Six nests are in other places on Hatteras Island. Ocracoke beaches have eight nests.

Colonial waterbirds had yet to make an appearance, but usually show up around the second week in May.
