On May 6, in an email from Superintendent of Dare County Schools to parents, Dr. John Farrelly announced Assistant Superintendent Arty Tillett is leaving DCS.

Tillett has been appointed the new Superintendent of Schools in Poquoson City Public Schools in Virginia. Farrelly’s note read: “Mr. Tillett has had a stellar 30-year career in Dare County as a teacher, school building administrator, and central office leader. He will be greatly missed by our school community.”

Tillett’s last day with DCS is June 30 and he will start his new career as superintendent on July 1.

Farrelly also announced that the first day of school for the 2020-2021 academic year will be August 17. In addition, each district is required to add five remote learning days into their school calendar.

During the May 12 Board of Education meeting, Farrelly will address and amend the calendar and share the amended version with parents on Wednesday, May 13.

As for the school budget, there is a projected loss of about $600,000 in local funding for the next fiscal year. “This is understandable given the economic shortfalls across the country, our state, and in Dare County,” Farrelly wrote.

To compensate for the losses, the Board of Ed agreed to cut five staff positions from the central office, making up $300,000. The remaining deficit will be made up by postponing planned requests throughout the next year.

Graduation plans will be announced Monday, May 11.
