Exhibition judge Alexis Joyner, retired professor of art at Elizabeth City State University, commented “The painting has a very pleasing use of color, and the play between the shape of the negative space and the imagery makes for a strong unified composition. The leading lines in the piece create continuous visual movement.”

Joyner also selected two artists from the 42 who entered the Exhibition for Excellence Awards. The first went to George Cheeseman of Manteo for the watercolor Me as My Doppelganger. The second Excellence Award went to Carolina Coto of Kill Devil Hills for mixed media work Golden Hour in Paradise.
