Federal authorities in North Carolina say a man and woman from Las Vegas have been arrested and accused of using obituary postings siphon $13 million in fraudulent charges from the North Carolina Medicaid Program.

Latisha Harron, 44, also known as Latisha Holt, and Timothy Harron, 50, are accused of stealing identities, billing the government for phony home health services and laundering the proceeds by buying luxury items including a private jet, jewelry, clothing and properties in Ahoskie and Rich Square, North Carolina, the Department of Justice said Wednesday.

WRAL-TV reports that Holt and Harron stole the identities by searching obituaries and funeral home websites for people who had recently died. They would use that personal information and gain one year of funds from NC Medicaid, which granted the funds with the knowledge that they were for the individuals’ care prior to their death, according to the indictment.

In a statement, U.S. Attorney Robert Higdon Jr. in Raleigh called the case one of the most brazen and egregious cases of home health Medicaid fraud ever in the area.

The attorney for Latisha Herron didn’t immediately return a message seeking comment Monday, and it wasn’t known if Timothy Herron has an attorney.
