Local artist and teacher Robin York was approached by Grits Grill owners Roxie and Rufus Pritchard to create an original Nags Head mural for the Nags Head restaurant.

The mural starts at the Wright Brothers Memorial and follows the Croatan Highway to Oregon Inlet with individual scenes painted for charter boats, the Bodie Island Lighthouse, hang gliding and beach goers. The Pritchards’ restaurants Grits Grill, next to The Outer Banks Hospital, and The Dunes Restaurant, across from Outlets Nags Head, are also included. Both restaurants have recently re-opened.

York, who taught art since 1985 at Manteo High School and now at College of The Albemarle, has worked in many art mediums, including pottery, batik, painting and more. She has a master’s degree in art education.

This mural was one of York’s largest commissioned works of art. She expressed hope that patrons of restaurants take a moment to really look at the elements of the work to appreciate the warmth and beauty of the area.
