To the Editor:

For several years I have been suggesting that the Dare County Board of Education retire the “Redskin” mascot at Manteo High School.

It appears that the Washington NFL team has been persuaded that its current mascot name is less than admirable from a business perspective.

Using that same concept, perhaps local citizens can strongly recommend to the school board that, for moral and educational reasons, Manteo should not continue to be the only high school in North Carolina that uses a mascot name that every dictionary defines as an offensive racial slur.

Please prevent student-athletes from being caught in the unenviable position of wearing jerseys that honor Manteo, Wanchese, and other Native Americans while simultaneously maligning these heroes as “Redskins.”
