COVID-19 update from Dare and surrounding counties

Since Tuesday, July 14, Dare County Health and Human Services has announced 40 new COVID-19 positive tests, bringing the total number of positive tests in the county to 246.

As of Friday at around 3 p.m., residents account for 140 of the positive tests; non-residents 106.

Of the 140 residents with positive tests, 50 are in home isolation, three are hospitalized, one has died and 82 have recovered or been asymptomatically cleared.

Of the three hospitalized, one reported July 17 is a male resident 65 or older; one reported July 15 is a female resident 65 or older; the third is also a resident male 65 or older, reported previously. Two are hospitalized out of the area. One is in Dare County.

Of the 106 non-residents with positive tests, 31 have transferred isolation to a home county. Some 14 remain in isolation in Dare County, one is hospitalized and 60 have recovered or been asymptomatically cleared.

Combining the 53 active positive resident cases with the14 non-residents in isolation in Dare shows that 67 people in Dare County are currently identified with coronavirus.

Of the 22 new lab-confirmed cases, 12 cases were not connected. “It is unclear how these individuals acquired the virus which indicates community spread,” reports the Friday afternoon update from Dare County Health and Human Services.

Since reporting started in Dare County, positive cases are in the following age ranges: 17 and under – 38; 18 to 24 years – 70; 25 to 49 years – 78; 50 to 64 years – 36; and 65 and over – 24.

On Tuesday, July 14, Dare County Department of Health and Human Services partnered with Mako Medical Laboratories for a testing clinic at Dare County Parks and Recreation facility in Kill Devil Hills. The summary of results shows:

– 243 diagnostic tests conducted: seven positive, 0 inconclusive, 0 invalid, 236 negative

– 194 antibody tests conducted: five positive, 189 negative

Another testing clinic will be held on Tuesday, July 28 starting at 1 p.m. at Dare County Center located at 950 Marshall Collins Drive, Manteo. Individuals can register for an appointment for the diagnostic test, the antibody test or both. Registration is required.

To schedule an appointment, call 252-475-5008. The call center is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Participants are required to send a photocopy of their government-issued identification card and insurance card prior to the event.

As of 2 p.m. on July 17, Hyde County Health Department reports 33 total cases of COVID-19. Of those, only one is reported to be active positive.

Tyrrell County has 64 lab-confirmed cases with 47 recovered. The county has had one death associated with COVID-19 according to the Martin-Tyrrell-Washington District Health on July 16.

Albemarle Regional Health Services, which serves eight northeastern counties, has received notification confirming a second death associated with COVID-19 in a Camden County resident. The individual was over the age of 65 and succumbed to complications from COVID-19.

As of July 17, current COVID-19 case counts for these northeastern North Carolina counties from Albemarle Regional Health Services are: Currituck County – 39 lab-confirmed cases, 16 active, 23 recovered and no deaths; Pasquotank County – 262 lab confirmed cases, 17 active, 228 recovered and 17 deaths; and Camden County – 44 lab confirmed cases, 11 active, 31 recovered and two deaths.
