Hosea Wilson was appointed and sworn in as the Dare County tax assessor at the Monday, Aug. 17 Dare County Board of Commissioners meeting. Wilson was promoted to the role after nearly five years as the assistant county assessor. His appointment follows the retirement of former assessor Greta Skeen, who served the county for 29 years.

“Hosea is an experienced tax professional with a great understanding of the procedures and laws for tax appraisal in North Carolina. We are fortunate that he was already working for the county because he is well qualified and ready to lead the Tax Appraisal Department,” said county manager Robert L. Outten.

Previously, Wilson served as tax administrator with Bertie and Chowan counties. Prior to working in local government, he was a real estate broker for Kitty Dunes Realty and a fee appraiser for Northeastern Appraisal Service.

Wilson graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill with a Bachelor of Arts in History in 1992 and completed the UNC School of Government County Administration Course in 2011. He has many professional accomplishments and is a member of multiple professional organizations, including the International Association of Assessing Officers (IAAO), the North Carolina Association of Assessing Officers (NCAAO) and the North Carolina Tax Collectors’ Association (NCTCA). In 2017, Wilson received the President’s Recognition for Outstanding Contributions to Assessment Administration by NCAAO.

As Dare County tax assessor, Wilson leads the Tax Appraisal Department, which is responsible for the listing, appraisal and assessment of all real property, personal property and registered motor vehicles in Dare. “The department ensures that all properties are fairly and equitably assessed at their market value and performs in-house, countywide revaluations in predetermined cycles,” stated a Dare County press release. “In addition, the department provides accurate land records administration and property mapping, maintains the property tax exemptions and exclusions program, and administers the land transfer tax. The Tax Appraisal Department is also responsible for damage assessment during storm related events.”

Wilson and his wife Emily live in Nags Head with their twin 17-year old sons, Bond and Hosea.
