A salt marsh dweller, the seaside sparrow (Ammospiza maritima) spends a good portion of life in lower altitudes, such as grasses, shrubs and even on the ground. There it will search for spiders, seeds, marine invertebrates and insects in the dirt and mud and on nearby plants.

These seaside sparrows were seen at Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge. For local national wildlife refuge conditions, review the information on refuge websites and/or call ahead.
