Planned construction work on Rodanthe bridge outlined

Each month, NCDOT distributes a “look ahead” for the planned construction activities on the

NC 12 Rodanthe bridge project. Construction activities are dependent on equipment and weather and are subject to change.

Between Aug. 27, 2020 and Sept. 26, 2020, the following construction activities are expected:

South End

– Work Trestle: Steel pipe pile installation will take place for Bridge Bent 42 to Bent 45 (i.e. approximately 1,375 feet to 1,000 feet from the shoreline). Track girders will be installed as individual steel pile clusters are installed. Pile driving can be expected to take place anytime between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. Monday to Sunday. A straddle platform and crane will remove the work trestle from Bent 30 through Bent 34 (i.e. approximately 1,325 feet to 1,200 feet from the shoreline).

– Bridge Piling: Concrete cylinder piles will be driven for Bridge Bent 37 to Bent 40 (i.e. 1,200 feet to 1,425 feet from the shoreline). Pile driving can be expected to take place anytime between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. Monday to Sunday.

– Cap Concrete Placements: Concrete will be placed for Bridge Bent Cap 37 to Bent Cap 39 (i.e. approximately 1,200 feet from the shoreline).

– Girders: Girders will be set for Span 36 to Span 39 (approximately 1,200 feet from the shoreline).

– Bridge Deck Concrete Placements: Concrete will be placed for Bridge Span 35 to Span 38 (i.e. 1,125 feet to 1,200 feet from the shoreline). These are anticipated to take place at night and/or early morning.

North End

– Work Trestle: Steel pipe installation will take place for Bridge Bent 87 to Bent 89 (i.e. approximately 625 feet to 350 feet into the water from the north shoreline). Track girders will be installed as individual steel pile clusters are installed. Pile driving can be expected to take place anytime between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. Monday to Sunday. A straddle platform and crane will remove the work trestle from Bent 99 through Bent 101 (i.e. on land approximately 1,275 to 1,000​ feet from the north shoreline).

– Bridge Piling: Concrete cylinder piles will be driven for Bridge Bent 92 to Bent 96 (i.e. on land approximately 50 feet to 600 feet from the north shoreline). Pile driving can be expected to take place anytime between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. Monday to Sunday.

– Cap Concrete Placements: Concrete will be placed for Bridge Bent Cap 94 to Bent Cap 96 (i.e. approximately 375 feet to 600 feet from the north shoreline).

– Girders: Girders are not anticipated to be set.

– Bridge Deck Concrete Placements: Concrete for bridge decks is not anticipated.

Overall Estimated Timeline

Pile driving for the bridge is anticipated to be complete in the fall or winter of 2020.

Project completion is currently targeted for fall 2021.  ​
