Waves, NC – Bette Gaye Rollinson Gray, 77, of Waves, NC died Tuesday, September 1, 2020, at home surrounded by loved ones.

A native of Buxton, she was born November 3, 1942, to the late Patricia Williams Rollinson Herbert and Robert Crisp Rollinson.

Faithful steward of Fair Haven United Methodist Church in Rodanthe, Bette was a member of United Methodist Women and set on the board of trustees. Bette worked tirelessly after Hurricane Irene to restore the church to its glory.

She spent over 35 years with Midgett Realty, dedicated to the hospitality and beauty of Hatteras Island.

Mrs. Gray was devoted to her family. She loved to cook and travel. Bette spent many hours enjoying her back porch and especially enjoyed watching their Purple Martins.

Bette is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 60 years, Rudolph Hamilton Gray; nieces, Caitlyn Gray of Waves, Caroline Gray of Waves, and Cassie Gray of Hatteras; sisters, Audrey Rollinson of Chicago, IL and Celia Meekins of Kill Devil Hills; sister-in-law, Susan Gray of Waves; a host of Rollinson family nieces and nephews; her faithful and dedicated caregiver, Elena Jaramillo and her caregiving team.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Victor, John Boyd, and Bobby Rollinson; two sisters, Peggy Gilbert and Shirley O’Neal; brother-in-law, Asa Gray III; and nephew, Asa Gray IV.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, September 8, 2020, at Fair Haven United Methodist Church with Pastors Tim Fitch and Dr. Susie Fitch-Slater officiating. Private burial will take place at the family cemetery in Waves. The family will receive friends and relatives for a viewing and visitation Monday evening from 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at the church. Masks will be required at the visitation and service.
