Duck Police Department releases report on August calls for service, enforcement actions

The Duck Police Department has released its monthly police report for August 2029.

From August 1, 2020 – August 31, 2020, there were 967 calls for service and officers issued 34 enforcement actions. Related to property checks, 584 business checks were made with four unsecured doors found and six extra patrols were conducted as requested by out of town property owners.

Duck Police Department reported the following “incidents of interest” which occurred throughout the month:

Domestic, 9th Avenue – Officers responded to a mutual aid request to assist Southern Shores Police Department at this location. Officers found that a 29-year-old male from Southern Shores assaulted his roommate, according to the DPD blotter. The male was arrested and charged with assault on a female. The roommate was written a citation for possession of marijuana and possession of marijuana paraphernalia. Arrest and citation were by Southern Shores Police Department.

DWI arrest, Duck Road – Officers responded to a hit and run vehicle collision. According to DPD, the suspect vehicle was followed by the victim vehicle to the intersection of Scarborough Lane and Ocean Front Court where officers made contact with the suspect. The driver, 41, of Montpelier, Va., was found to be the operator of the vehicle and was found to be impaired. He was arrested and charged with driving while impaired, no operator’s license, open container and leaving the scene of an accident. He was held at the Dare County Detention Center in lieu of a $7,500 secured bond. The following day after determining that the vehicle did not have insurance, the vehicle was seized pursuant to N.C.G.S. 20- 28.3.

Damage to property, Duck Road/Aqua S Restaurant – A pedestrian crossing sign was damaged by an unknown suspect on the east side of the crosswalk at Aqua S Restaurant. DOT was notified.

Dispute, Osprey Ridge Road – Family dispute over parenting skills. Several subjects were asked to leave the property by the leaseholder and subjects complied.

Trespassing, E. Bias Lane – Unknown subject was in pool area and hopped pool fence when noticed by house occupant. Subject described as unknown race male, wearing dark blue zip up hoodie, black jogging pants and black shoes.

Domestic, Four Seasons Lane – 28-year-old male, intoxicated, argument ensued with his mother/father. Alleged physical pushing, but no one wished to pursue charges. Subjects separated for the night.

Injury to property/larceny, area of Four Seasons – 17-year-old male and 18-year-old male were observed riding bicycles down Duck Road carrying a street sign and vehicle control barrier. Investigation revealed subjects damaged Four Seasons vehicle gates, pulled street signs from the ground, broke into the Tap Shack, damaged Tap Shack grounds and a vehicle on site. Criminal charges are pending.

Narcotics/alcohol violations, Duck Road – An officer observed an occupied vehicle in the parking lot after hours. Contact was made and found three males smoking marijuana and consuming alcohol inside the vehicle. Two males were over 18 and the other was a minor. Criminal charges are pending.

Lost child, Ocean Way – Parents called for assistance in reference to a missing 7-year-old. The child left the residence on a bicycle without permission and was found by responding police units safe and sound.

Cyberstalking, Duck Road – A bank customer was not happy with a transaction and continued to send emails to bank employees even after their matter was settled.

Domestic dispute, W. Sea Hawk Drive – DPD reports that while en-route to a domestic dispute, the female caller stated she was leaving and did not need a response. Officers arrived and spoke with caller’s husband and others on scene. Subjects on scene stated the dispute was verbal and they believed the female was going back to Ohio. Officers attempted to call the female but were unsuccessful. Subjects on scene were advised to call if the female returned.

Trespassing, Four Seasons Lane – Report of several juveniles from the neighboring house swimming in the renter’s pool. Officers spoke with both parties about the incident and while officers were on scene, an argument started between the parties. Officers explained the process for taking out charges and defused the situation. Both parties were advised to call back if the problem continued.

Drug violations, Duck Road – Officers observed a suspicious vehicle under Scarborough Lane Shops early in the morning. Two subjects were found sleeping in the vehicle. According to DPD, when officers approached the vehicle, they noticed a strong odor of marijuana. A citation was issued for possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. The following night, a different vehicle was noticed in the same spot. Officers found one male in the vehicle and the strong odor of marijuana. Citations were written to two individuals for possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Overdose, Duck Road – A vehicle pulled around the back of the Public Safety building and firefighters were alerted that a male in that vehicle was overdosing. Officers and firefighters monitored the subject until EMS arrived. According to DPD, the subject’s friends stated that he is known to use heroin and cocaine, but they didn’t know what he had used that morning. Subjects are working in the area.

Arrest, Duck Road/Scarborough Lane) – Officers were dispatched to the report of a vehicle operating recklessly on Duck Road. Officers located the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop. The driver, a 42-year-old from Roanoke Rapids, was found to be impaired and was arrested and charged with DWI.

Damage to property, Duck Road – A window on the church bus was found shattered. It is unknown if the damage was intentional. A similar report was filled recently and that damage was caused by a rock thrown from a lawnmower.

Traffic collisions throughout the month included:

Duck Road/Amy Lane – Two vehicle rear end collision in heavy traffic. Minor damage to the front vehicle and no damage to the rear vehicle. Crash resulted in the DWI arrest noted above.

Duck Road – Fender bender in the parking lot.

Duck Road – Vehicle vs. deer, no damage.

Duck Road – Two vehicle rear end collision. Property damage only.

Duck Road – Hit and run. A black Ram truck struck the pedestrian crossing sign and left the scene.

Duck Road/Tuckahoe Drive – Driver failed to see the vehicle in front of them stop for traffic and was unable to stop before striking the vehicle.

Duck Road/Ships Watch Drive – Driver failed to see the vehicle in front of them stop for traffic and was unable to stop before striking the vehicle.
