The Manteo Planning Board voted not to recommend adding walk-up ATMs to the list of permitted uses by the issuance of a conditional use permit in the town’s zoning ordinance. The standalone ATMs in parking lots were regarded by the Zoning Board as unattractive with the potential of creating pedestrian safety issues.

At the November 10 Planning Board meeting, the board voted to allow a zoning permit application for 500 N. Hwy. 64 to add an apartment to the Olde Towne Creamery building. The one bedroom proposed apartment is within the footprint of the existing commercial building. Before the space could be converted, it would need to undergo renovations, including firewalls to meet building and fire code requirements.

The final business before the board was a review of the College of The Ablemarle’s new academic building plan from the Manteo Preservation and Architectural Review Committee (PARC). Included in the review, PARC expressed a need to prioritize connecting the campus to downtown Manteo with a walking path and a suggestion was made for two-way traffic on a portion of Fernando Street because of traffic concerns. Overall, the PARC committee “noted excitement regarding the proposed development.”
