Portion of NC 12 on Ocracoke Island closed, standing water on NC 12 on Hatteras Island reported

In a Monday morning update, the North Carolina Department of Transportation has reported that a portion of NC 12 on Ocracoke Island is closed.

“Due to extreme ocean overwash, NC12 on Ocracoke has been CLOSED between the ferry terminal and the NPS Pony Pens. Overwash is expected to continue through the day today, especially at high tides,” stated NCDOT.

NC 12 on Hatteras island is open as of 8:25 Monday morning, however NCDOT has advised “there are several areas of deep standing water due to rain. Please drive carefully if traveling today.”

Additionally, Hatteras Inlet ferry operations have been suspended service due to the highway closure on Ocracoke Island. Call 252-996-6000 or 6001 for updates.
