Cape Hatteras volleyball wins against Bear Grass; Lady Hurricanes go to state tournament

Cape Hatteras Secondary’s varsity volleyball team defeated Bear Grass in three straight sets Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2021 in Buxton.

All three sets went into the third service round as the two teams swapped service back and forth.

The only break-away service was in the third set when Evela Chandler served up four points in the second round.

That third set, the last of the regular season contests, ended fittingly with senior Laura Hooper serving for the match point.

In the first set, Cape Hatteras won 25-23. In the second set, the score was 25-21. In the third set, Cape Hatteras won the match 25-18.

Cape Hatteras Secondary senior volleyball players and families were celebrated Tuesday. Seniors together with families are, from left, Rubie Shoemaker, Laura Hooper, McKayla Gordon and Evan Augustson.

At the Jan. 6 match, Cape Hatteras Secondary School Principal Beth Rooks, athletic director Tim Spruill, first-year volleyball coach Brittany Barnett and teammates saluted the four seniors and their families.

Seniors are Evan Augustson, McKayla Gordon, Laura Hooper and Rubie Shoemaker. These Cape Hatteras student-athletes have played volleyball together for four years.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better group of girls in my first year,” said Barnett. The team finished the conference season 4-1 and overall 5-3.

This Jan. 6 match is not the last for this team. Cape Hatteras Secondary will play in the 1-A North Carolina High School Athletic Association volleyball tournament. The first match of the tournament is scheduled for Jan. 12 at the Buxton gymnasium. Time and opponent will be announced by the state association this weekend.
