COVID-19 update on cases, vaccinations

New cases of COVID-19 continue to grow, though some downward trends at the state level are noted.

On Jan. 22, North Carolina reported 7,436 new cases of coronavirus across the state. Since Jan. 14, the new case total plunged to a low of 4,058 people.

Hospitalizations for COVID-19 numbered 3,881, down 369 cases. Across North Carolina, 2,089 ICUs are in use with 371 ICUs empty but staffed.

Dare County – As of Jan. 21, the total number of cumulative COVID-19 positive cases in Dare County is 2,370, including 40 additional cases reported on Thursday.

Active positive resident cases number 248, according to the county’s dashboard.

Dare County’s death count remains at seven.

COVID-19 patients in a hospital number 13.

In Dare County, those now eligible to receive the vaccine are people 65 years of age and older and healthcare workers. Those who are qualified to receive the vaccine can register online at darenc.com/Register4vaccine or call 252-475-5008. Those who register will be called to schedule an appointment.

At the Dare County Detention Center, weekly tests were scheduled for Friday, Jan. 22. Results will be available this weekend.

Both Peak Resources in Nags Head and Spring Arbor in Kill Devil Hills have reported outbreaks – 18 cases for Peak and two for Spring Arbor, as of press time.

Hyde County – Hyde County has published new phone numbers to use for registering for a vaccination and to make an appointment. On the mainland, call the county health department at 252-926-4467. On Ocracoke, call 252-489-3622.

The most recent figures from Jan. 22 show a cumulative total of 598 cases. Of those, 90 are active positive. Deaths from coronavirus in Hyde County are now seven.

The Hyde County Health Department case numbers will be updated Jan. 29, 2021.

Tyrrell County – On Jan. 21, Martin-Tyrrell-Washington Health District reported that Tyrrell County’s total cumulative case number is now 227. Some 186 people have recovered. On Jan. 21, 35 people had active positive cases. Six individuals have died in the county due to coronavirus. In Tyrrell County, 213 first doses and six second doses of coronavirus vaccine have been administered.

Camden, Currituck, Pasquotank counties – Albemarle Regional Health Services has developed an online registration form for individuals to register for a COVID-19 vaccination appointment.

Albemarle Regional Health Services has scheduled first come first served drive through second dose Pfizer vaccine in Pasquotank Jan. 25 and Jan. 26 at College of The Albemarle and at Maple Park in Currituck Jan. 26. The hours are 9 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 4 p.m.

First dose clinics will be held Jan.  27 at Camden Intermediate School and Pasquotank County High School. On Jan. 28, a first dose clinic will be held at Maple Park in Currituck.

On Jan. 17, 2021, Albemarle Regional Health Services published the following case information:

Camden: 434 lab-confirmed cases, with 110 cases now active. Camden County has lost five people to the coronavirus.

Currituck: 992 total lab-confirmed cases. Some 202 cases are active. Currituck County has lost 12 people to coronavirus.

Pasquotank: 2,483 lab-confirmed cases. Active cases number 317. COVID-related deaths in the county number 67 people.

The cumulative total cases for the eight-county region stands at 9,366 cases. The active number of cases in the region is 1,209. Across the region, 213 people have died of coronavirus.
