COVID-19 update: Two metrics trending down in North Carolina

Two COVID-19 metrics are trending down in North Carolina.

On Feb. 1, 2021, North Carolina reported 2,926 new cases of coronavirus, 4,033 fewer than Friday, Jan. 29. Hospitalizations for COVID-19 numbered 2,741, down 307 cases. Across North Carolina, 1,992 ICUs are in use with 460 ICUs empty but staffed.

Deaths of North Carolinians from the virus number 9,409 and increase of 252 deaths from Jan. 29, 2021.

Dare County – As of Feb. 2, 2021, the total number of COVID-19 cases in Dare County is 2,592.

Active positive resident cases number 177, according to the county’s dashboard.

Dare County’s death count remains at seven persons.

COVID-19 patients in a hospital number nine.

On Feb. 2, Dare County reported 33 additional lab-confirmed cases, of which 24 are residents.

In Dare County, those now eligible to receive the vaccine are people 65 years of age and older and healthcare workers. Those who are qualified to receive the vaccine can register online at darenc.com/Register4vaccine or call 252-475-5008. Those who register will be called to schedule an appointment.

Through Sunday, Jan. 31, 6,399 first doses of coronavirus vaccine have been administered in Dare County. Second doses numbering 232 have been administered. Some 1,400 appointments were scheduled. The waiting list held the names of 2,790 individuals.

Regarding vaccine availability in Dare County, county manager Robert L. Outten told the Dare County Board of Commissioners on Feb. 1, that “getting enough vaccine is the problem.” He declared that the county is capable of vaccinating 2,000 people per day.

Dare’s allocation for the next three weeks is 300 first doses for each week. For the current week, Dare asked for and received additional doses bringing the total to be administered to 800 at two clinics.

The Dare County Detention Center reported a total of 20 detainees with coronavirus. The center is on lockdown.

Peak Resources in Nags Head is reporting 34 cases on its corporate website. Spring Arbor in Kill Devil Hills shows one staff member and six residents have the coronavirus, according to the state’s dashboard.

Hyde County – Hyde County has published new phone numbers to use for registering for a vaccination and to make an appointment. On the mainland, call the county health department at 252-926-4467. On Ocracoke, call 252-489-3622.

On Jan. 29, Hyde County had 609 total cumulative cases with 16 active positive cases. Deaths number seven persons.

Tyrrell County – On Feb. 1, Martin-Tyrrell-Washington Health District reported that Tyrrell County’s total cumulative case number is now 268. Six individuals have died in the county due to coronavirus.

Wes Gray with the Martin-Tyrrell-Washington Health District reports that Tyrrell County will receive 100 vaccine first doses this week, after not receiving any for the last two weeks. He expects Tyrrell to receive a like number for two more weeks.

The health district is holding normal appointment-only vaccine clinics and a mass vaccination clinic Friday, Feb. 5 in Martin County to use 300 doses distributed by the state. Some 800 doses are available for second doses, reports Gray.

At the Tyrrell County Work Farm, 20 inmates and eight staff members have contracted the virus.

Tyrrell House, a residential care facility, has three total cases, reports the health district.

In Tyrrell County, 440 first doses of COVID-19 vaccine and 12 second doses have been administered as of Feb. 1, 2021.

Camden, Currituck, Pasquotank counties – On Jan. 31, 2021, Albemarle Regional Health Services published the following case information:

Camden: 467 lab-confirmed cases, with 36 cases now active. Camden County has lost five people to the coronavirus. First dose vaccines administered number 1,720. No second doses are reported.

Currituck: 1,111 total lab-confirmed cases. Some 103 cases are active. Currituck County has lost 13 people to coronavirus. Currituck County has had 4,563 vaccine first doses and 860 second doses of the COVID-19 vaccine administered.

Pasquotank: 2,696 lab-confirmed cases. Active cases number 182. COVID-related deaths in the county number 71 people. In Pasquotank, 6,354 vaccine first doses and 2,068 second doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered.

The cumulative total cases for the eight-county region stands at 10,120 cases. The active number of cases in the region is 617. Across the region, 226 people have died of coronavirus.
