On January 20, 2021, Kamala Harris became the first female, first black and first Asian American vice president of the United States. The country watched as history was made and celebrations took place throughout the nation.

A group of local Outer Banks women found a way to safely celebrate and commemorate the occasion. The gathering started out as a group text.

“Betty sent out a text that morning to our group chat saying, ‘Don’t forget your Chucks and pearls,’” Necy Morris said of Betty Selby. The Chuck Taylor shoes and pearls look, a signature Harris look, paid tribute to her accomplishments.

Morris suggested via the group chat that the women meet up the night of Inauguration Day. “I thought it would be really cool to get together later at Cartwright Park and take a picture to commemorate a special moment in history,” Morris said.

Sixteen women showed up at 5:30 p.m. that night in the park, accompanied by a photographer, to celebrate. “We should be taking part in this,” Morris started, “Kamala Harris is sending a clear message to little girls everywhere that they can aspire to be whatever they want to be.”

Generations of mothers and daughters gathered together to celebrate and catch up. Morris said, “Being shut up because of the virus . . . it’s been a long time since we could all get together and have a minute with just us girls.”

Selby added that the group of women included everyone from community teachers, retired teachers, principals, support staff, medical managers, supervisors and even a member of the AKA sorority, which Harris is also a part of. “Just all different talents in the community,” Selby said.

“It just felt good to be there,” Morris noted.
