Three bears – a sow and two cubs – stroll down a clearing on Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge. Waterfowl, deer and black bears are three leading reasons people visit the refuge. The black bear is the only bear species found on the refuge and in North Carolina, states USFWS.

Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge is one of nine national wildlife refuges in the Coastal North Carolina National Wildlife Refuges Complex.

USFWS reminds the public that for “the safety of yourself and your family, as well as the wildlife you are viewing, ALWAYS VIEW FROM A SAFE DISTANCE! If you see a change in the behavior of the wildlife (they move away, etc), you are TOO CLOSE! And remember: all traffic laws apply on Refuge roads. Seat belts, car seats for children, etc. – whatever is required by the State on a public highway is required on the Refuge!
