Chris Palestrant returns to Bryan Cultural Series with ‘Big Music in the Movies . . . and Knowing What to Steal’

Chris Palestrant returns to the Outer Banks on Wednesday, February 24 at 7:30 p.m. for a Don and Catharine Bryan Cultural Series virtual event. This free program will be streamed live. Registration is required and may be completed at bryanculturalseries.org.

“Irreverent, funny and very informative, last January Chris brought his 50 Years of Broadway: from Hair to Hamilton the big screen to the delight of a packed house,” stated a press release from the Bryan Cultural Series. “We can’t pack the theater like we did last year, but we can offer Chris and his latest dive into the history of show biz Big Music in the Movies . . . and Knowing What to Steal for the home audience.

“Pop some popcorn, grab a beverage and sit back and enjoy the show as Chris unveils the secrets of movie theme success.”

When John Williams needed a theme for Star Wars, did he lift the idea from an 1869 opera? What other well-known – and perhaps not so well-known – movie themes have used music composed 100 or 200 years ago to create a mood?

Palestrant is a professor of music composition and theory at Elizabeth City State University and was recently honored as the “Teacher of the Year” by the University of North Carolina Board of Governors. In addition to teaching, he is a member of the blues band Uphill, which performs throughout northeastern North Carolina and Southern Virginia.

“Be sure to put Big Music in the Movies . . . and Knowing What to Steal on the must see virtual schedule for an evening combining entertainment with some little known fun facts,” stated the release.

The Bryan Cultural Series is a non-profit organization formed in 2012. The board of directors is composed of nine community leaders dedicated to offering a series of high quality cultural events, including a variety of visual, literary and performing arts. The board strives to glean from talent that has attained regional as well as national recognition to maintain a high standard.
