Dare teams out of state basketball tournament

Cape Hatteras Secondary and First Flight High girls varsity basketball teams lost in the first round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association tournament.

Cape Hatteras lost to Riverside 54 to 37.

First Flight lost to North Pitt 82-49.

Manteo High forfeited its game.

Cape Hatteras played Riverside even in the first half. The Lady Hurricanes led by two at the end of the first quarter and trailed by two at the end of the second.

But it was a different story in the third quarter. In less than three minutes, Riverside racked up 13 points on six layups and one free throw. Riverside defenders crashed passing lanes to steal the ball and race down court.

Cape Hatteras had a resurgence. By the end of the quarter, Cape Hatteras trailed by seven.

In the fourth quarter, Riverside poured in the points.

Racking up the points for Riverside in the third quarter was Janeja Perry, who scored an unofficial 19 points in the game. Top scorer for the game was Shiya Rhodes with an unofficial 24. The third Riverside player to score points was Jermaria Brown with an unofficial 11.

For Cape Hatteras, freshman Kylie Phillips scored 11.
