Currituck County Fire & Emergency Medical Services is partnering with the Virginia Beach Fire Department to distribute free smoke alarms to residents in Knotts Island.

On March 6-7, 2021, officials and local volunteers will go door-to-door through the Sandy Point neighborhood with the goal of ensuring that every home has working smoke detectors.

The teams will inspect smoke detectors for residents and, if necessary, replace or install new smoke detectors free of charge. Outside of Sandy Point, residents in other areas of Knotts Island may receive the same service by scheduling an appointment with Currituck Fire & EMS at 252-429-3536.

Sandy Point is the location of a February 11 mobile home fire, which involved the death of a 24 year old woman. Inspectors found that the mobile home did not have a working smoke alarm.

Currituck County received the smoke detectors for this effort from the North Carolina State Fire Marshal’s Office. “Smoke detectors can save lives by alerting occupants of a fire and allowing them time to escape,” stated a Currituck County press release. “Families should have a fire escape plan that includes what they would do if the primary exit is blocked by fire. Currituck Fire & EMS can provide safety information and help families develop fire safety plans.”
