Flowers of red maple (Acer rubrum) are in bloom on Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge now. The flowers will mature into the winged seeds that fly through the air like little helicopters late in the spring. Bees are working the flowers now; birds and small mammals will eat the mature seeds.
