Freedmen, Surfmen, Heroes essay contest winners for Kitty Hawk Elementary named

On March 10, Darrell Collins and Doug Stover from the Pea Island Preservation Society, Inc. presented Kitty Hawk Elementary students Hadley Casella and Hayden Shope with awards recognizing their essay submissions to the Richard Etheridge Freedmen Surfmen, Heroes essay contest.
Fourth grade students across Dare County participated in the society’s virtual lesson on the history of Richard Etheridge and the Pea Island Lifesavers.
Essays by Casella and Shope were selected for recognition from 52 submitted.
