Elizabeth City artist Alla Rossow took top honors in the 26th Annual Artist Self-Portrait Exhibition now on display at Glenn Eure’s Ghost Fleet Gallery in Nags Head. Receiving first place was her watercolor “Hello, I Am Alla.”

Exhibition judge Melanie Smith, owner of Seaside Art Gallery, said of Rossow’s work, “I enjoyed her use of color and how she employed the warm and cool tones to create the shape of her face.”

Smith also selected two eastern North Carolina artists for Excellence Awards.

The first went to J. Joshua Bigham for an archival inkjet print “Condescension.” “The stark details in white and black make this a powerful image,” she commented.

The second Excellence Award went to Rachel Breitinger for a stoneware and tempera paint sculpture “Still On My Mind,” selected for the strength of its expression and the artist’s beautiful handling of her medium.

In addition, four Honorable Mention ribbons were presented: one to a combination sugar lift/etch line/aquatint/engraving by Michael Ehlbeck titled “Oh, The Poor, Poor Cow;” another to artist Matthew Egan for a lithograph “Just A Gigolo;” the third to Lexi Best for a jacquard woven diptych “You’re As Beautiful As You Feel;” and the last to “Pheasant,” a silkscreen by Katya Hutchinson.

Work of 55 visual artists from North Carolina as well as California, Massachusetts, Michigan, Virginia, Wisconsin and Bainbridge Island, Washington are featured in the show.

In 2021, literary artists were also invited to participate in the self-portrait event. Eleven depicted themselves in the written word.

Literary judge Matt Walker of Milepost magazine awarded the top literary honor to Lynne Francis for a prose piece “Serious Girl” and an Honorable Mention to Suzanne Scott Constantine for performance poetry “So You Think You Know Me.”

The exhibition will be on display at the Gallery through May 6 and is available for viewing during gallery hours 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday.  For further information, call 252-441-6584.
