1947 – 2021

Corolla, NC – After 73 years of a life well lived, Gary McGee passed on April 28, 2021.  Gary was born in McGee’s Crossroads in Johnston County, to Bledsoe McGee and Maudie Lee Honeycutt McGee (both deceased). He grew up traveling to the sunny beaches and crashing waves of South Nags Head, and later built his dream home on the Outer Banks. A full-time resident of Corolla for the last 17 years, Gary was beloved by countless friends and family and was an active member of his Church, his Corolla Community, and the greater Outer Banks area.

More than anything, Gary loved his family, and his family will love him always.  As husband and wife, Gary and Linda enjoyed fifty years of love, happiness, and memories together. They encouraged, complemented, and supported each other to pursue their opportunities and dreams. Gary always loved and supported his two sons in their endeavors and beamed with happiness and pride anytime he talked about them.  He was a great role model, husband, Dad, Granddad, and man. Jeffrey, Jill, Gary, and Linda were fortunate to share weekly meals and experiences together that they will hold tightly in their hearts and memories. Scott and his family will forever cherish and remember crabbing adventures, ice cream afternoons, and relaxing naps with Bryce and Kolette’s beloved PopPop. Gary also shared great life experiences with his brothers, Ray (Beth) and Ken (Joy) and their many cousins, nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Gary believed in helping others and doing things the right way. After graduating from UNC-Chapel Hill and receiving a Master of Public Administration from NC State, Gary worked in local government for his entire career.  The forever leader, Gary helped North Carolinians all across the State, from Pittsboro to Watauga County, to 20 years as City Manager of Hickory, and later on the Outer Banks in Kitty Hawk. Never fully retiring from public life, his most recent honor was being appointed by Gov. Roy Cooper as Chair of the Currituck County Board of Elections.

A remembrance and celebration of Gary’s life will be held on Wednesday, May 5, 2021 at 10 a.m. at the Outer Banks Presbyterian Church in Kill Devil Hills. Due to COVID-19 protections, always carefully followed by Gary, the family has asked that anyone planning to attend the service register with the Church on the Church’s website at www.outerbankspresbyterian.org. The service will also be live-streamed under the “watch services” section on the Church website.  Gary enjoyed flowers, but he liked seeing them grow even more, so in lieu of flowers, the family requests that any memorial be made to the Church in Gary’s honor.
