Excellence Awards: Ray Matthews “Sunrise On Portsmouth Island” (photography), Jackie Koenig “Party Wave” (oil), Cyndi Goetcheus Sarfan “Resting Terns” (photography) and Susannah Sakal “Cross Flight” (resin on wood).

Honorable Mentions: Bobby Wiltshire “Carriage House” (watercolor), Suzanne Scott Constantine “Possibility” (mixed media) and Colleen Fagersten “Resist” (hand dyed silk).

“It is always impressive to see what people choose to have as a subject,” said judge Susan Evans. “The skill level and media in this show is diverse, and all of the pieces stand on their own. It was a hard job to select the winners. I chose “Beautiful NC Crop” as Best In Show because the piece has a timeless quality that draws you in. It is light and simple, yet intricate. If this piece was hanging in my house, it would make me very happy.”

Janet Groom Pierce’s Best In Show oil painting “Beautiful NC Crop” features a North Carolina farm field of clary sage.

“The first time I saw the field it was like walking into another world with acres and acres of lush color and total peace,” said Pierce. “What a perfect subject to paint! After receiving the news that my painting won Best In Show for the 24th Mollie Fearing Memorial Art Show, I did my happy dance! This was a wonderful surprise. I look forward to seeing the show and its many different works of art. My thanks go to the Fearing family and Dare County Arts Council for making this show a reality.”

The show is held in memory of Mollie A. Fearing, one of the founders of Dare County Arts Council.

The 24th Mollie Fearing Memorial Art Show will be open for viewing in Dare County Arts Council’s Courtroom Gallery during normal gallery hours until May 29.

The People’s Choice Award recipient will be announced the day the show closes, as guests who visit the show will be able to vote on the People’s Choice piece throughout the month.
