Susan Dotterer Dixon of Nags Head happened upon a great photo opportunity recently while driving down Buffalo City Road in the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge.

While taking photos of wildflowers in the early afternoon, she “spotted this black bear walking down the road then wandering off of the side to feast on some grass and wildflowers.”

Dixon said this was her “first time photographing a bear that close (using my telephoto lens of course) from my car. So fun to watch!”

Buffalo City Road is located off of U.S. 64 on the Dare County mainland. Alligator River NWR, consisting of about 158,800 acres, was established to protect and conserve migratory birds and other wildlife resources through the protection of wetlands. More information on the refuge may be found here.

The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service often issues reminders to always view wildlife from a safe distance – as Dixon did – and that if you notice a change in the behavior of the animals being observed (such as them moving away), you are too close.
