As of May 20, 2021, four loggerhead sea turtles have buried nests on the Cape Hatteras National Seashore beaches. Two nests are on Hatteras Island and two on Ocracoke.

Shorebirds have also been active. As of May 20, 2021:

– American oystercatchers have 13 active nests with one at Cape Point, four on Hatteras Island and eight on Ocracoke Island. Some 16 chicks are active with two on Bodie Island, four chicks at Cape Point, four on Hatteras Island and six on Ocracoke Island.

– Colonial waterbirds have 307 active nests on Hatteras Island and 15 on Ocracoke.

– Piping plovers have two active nests at Cape Point.
