Nags Head commissioners held a budget workshop May 19. Planning director Michael Zehner summarized the operating budget for his department and the YMCA Skate Park renovation project. The town has included in the 2021-22 budget $205,000 to renovate one side of the park. According to the action report from the meeting, “It was Board consensus that staff provide them with a copy of the agreement between the Town and the YMCA re: the Skate Park in order to consider the Town’s obligation moving forward and to also provide a scope/cost figure as a starting point for a safe facility.”

Finance director Amy Miller mentioned that the budget contains a placeholder of $100,000 for human resources pay/classification plan, though commissioner Renee Cahoon stated that the amount needed would exceed that to appropriately pay employees. Interim town manager Greg Sparks was asked to request advice from The Maps Group and present it at the June 2 board meeting. The board also requested a spreadsheet identifying fund balance and projects or debts that may impact it.

The proposed budget included a 5 percent water rate increase. The increase will be used, “to pay for the CIP project to replace asbestos waterlines in Nags Head Cove,” according to the meeting actions report.

The board was informed that a one or two cent tax increase for fiscal year 2021-22 may be necessary. It was also discussed for the manager to purchase a demo Quint fire truck for a shorter wait time.
