Re: Letter of Dr. Edward Cornet, published June 2, 2021

Dear Sir:

Dr. Cornet’s letter says, “over the past ten years the measured beach erosion rate of more than 6 feet per year is more than 2 to 3 times higher . . .” My family has owned ocean front property near Trout Run in Southern Shores since 1951. In 1993 we had a survey that showed the First Line of Stable Natural Vegetation (FLSNV), and we had another survey in 2018. During that 25 year period, the maps show that the FLSNV had moved about 20 feet to the west as result of erosion. The FLSNV is the point at which the usual high tide stops and vegetation can grow. Dr. Cornet’s letter suggests that this change should have been 150 feet, not 20. Things may not be quite as bad as he says.
