Angie Matthews, nurse navigator for cancer services, has been named The Outer Banks Hospital’s June Employee of the Month. She joined the hospital team in May 2018.

Matthews is often described by her team as a blessing to the cancer program and is well-known for her care and compassion, dedication and willingness to go above and beyond, stated a press release from TOBH.

“Matthews provides the steadying presence needed by patients during what can often be a difficult time. She holds their hand and stays with them every step of the way,” stated the release. “This has enabled so many to not only survive, but thrive while fighting an arduous battle. It is not uncommon to hear patient’s comment, ‘I don’t know how I would have gotten through this without Angie.’”

The release also noted that Matthews “consistently steps up when help is needed, even outside the bounds of her job description. Time and time again, with positive energy and an encouraging smile, she puts the best interest of her patients and co-workers first, making her admired and respected by all.”

Dr. Charles Shelton, medical director of the cancer program, shared “Without her, we would not be an accredited cancer program with the Commission on Cancer.” He continued, “Her role goes much beyond the usual nursing and navigation, and overlaps with research and quality projects that make us the high quality program we are. The nurse navigator role is such a crucial part of that success, and we are very grateful she has filled that role so nicely. At times I wish we could duplicate her!”
