Hatteras Island’s annual Independence Day celebration is back. “Fireworks at the Beach” will be held in Avon at the Avon Pier on the 4th of July.

The Avon Property Owners Assn. is sponsoring the event, which is funded in part by the Outer Banks Visitors Bureau.

The 20-minute fireworks display, presented by Pyrotecnico, will begin about 9:15 p.m. from a launch site at the end of the Avon Pier.

“Take out your portable radio at 9 p.m. and add to your enjoyment of the festivities by setting the dial to Radio Hatteras FM 101.5 where you can hear Bob Barris talk a little about the origin of fireworks and offer a brief history about the celebration of Independence Day,” stated an event announcement. “Then watch the sky light up to a very familiar galactic tune and movie themes, followed by a selection of patriotic music, all set for the fireworks show.”

To stream Radio Hatteras online, go to radiohatteras.org and click on “Listen Live” or find the Radio Hatteras Player app in for mobile devices in the app store.

At the conclusion of the show, Radio Hatteras will continue to broadcast red, white and blue music until 11 p.m.

Donations may be made to APOA Fireworks and mail to APOA, P. O. Box 9, Avon, NC 27915.

Fireworks are visible all along the Avon beach and parking is limited, so it is advised to walk, bike or carpool. The National Park Service is allowing vehicles to remain on the beach at Ramp 38 after permitted hours to enjoy the fireworks. At the completion of the show, all ORVs should remain stationary until 10 p.m. to allow pedestrians to leave the beach safely. At 10 p.m., ORVs should begin moving cautiously to Ramp 38 to exit the beach. All ORVs must be off the beach by 10:30 p.m.
