To the Editor:

As we approach the beginning of the 2021-2022 academic school year, I suggest that the Dare County School Board revisit the issue of the athletic mascot at Manteo High School.

With the change of mascot at Arndt Middle School in Catawba County to “Warriors,” it appears that Manteo High is the only public school in the state of North Carolina that continues to cheer its racially offensive athletic mascot name.

The Washington Football Team and most educational institutions across the nation have recognized that a respectable team name sends an important message to all.

It is contradictory for such an internationally attractive community to honor the great man, MANTEO, … and … also allow students of all complexions to unwittingly rally behind such a questionable mascot.

Hopefully, change is near.
