John 11:51-52 – He did not say this on his own, but as high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the Jewish nation, and not only for that nation but also for the scattered children of God, to bring them together and make them one.

Have you ever said something profound and yet you had no idea how profound it really was? That was Caiaphas here. He was simply trying to get rid of a troublemaker, trying to hold onto what they had, keep the peace, not lose their power, hold onto their influence. As far as Caiaphas was concerned, this was about keeping things the way they were comfortable with. He had no idea he was really prophesying and speaking a powerful and wonderful word from the Lord.

Jesus was indeed to die for the Jewish nation. But not in the way nor for the reason they thought. They wanted things to continue as there were, but God had something far better, far bigger in mind. They were striving for political stability, God was looking for spiritual revolution. They wanted earthly peace, but God wanted true freedom, heavenly peace, forgiveness of man’s sin and the restoration of the relationship with God. And this was not just for the Jewish nation, it was for all of mankind, for the children of God who might seem to be forgotten and lost from him. Jesus came to be the sacrifice for the whole world, regardless of nationality, regardless of sex, regardless of poverty or wealth, regardless of skin color, regardless of any distinction that might be placed upon them. Jesus came to die for us all! That is great news, that is the hope not only the Jews needed, but that the whole world needs. It was true not just in Caiaphas’ day, but in our day as well.

And so, do you accept that sacrifice Jesus was to make on your behalf? Are you willing to make him the Lord and the Savior of your life? And who are you going to share this good news with today?

Father, thank you for Jesus! In his name, amen.
