Manteo Rotary Club announces 2021 scholarship recipients

Manteo Rotary Club members have announced their scholarship recipients for this year. The Inshore Slam Fishing Tournament fundraising event and its sponsors provide the club’s financial support for scholarships, local grants for the community and international projects.

Of this year’s 15 announced scholarships, nine will go to Manteo High School 2021 graduates, four to Wanchese Christian Academy graduates and two current college students will receive continuing scholarship support. This year’s recipients included:

The Manteo Rotary Club Percy W. and Elizabeth G. Meekins Scholarship for $2,500 was presented to Ragen Twiford, who is attending North Carolina State University.

The Kellogg Cuthrell Manteo Rotary Scholarship for $1,500 and the Marine Electronics Scholarship presented by Manteo Rotary for $1,000 went to Jack Westheiden, who is attending North Carolina State University.

The Manteo Rotary Club recognized Inshore Slam platinum sponsor, Johns Brothers Security Scholarship, with a $2,500 scholarship to Caleb Maher, who is attending Chowan University.

Mossy Oak Properties NC Land and Farms Scholarship presented by Manteo Rotary for $1,000 was presented to Isabella Bartell, who is continuing her studies at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.

The $1,000 Beach Medical Care Scholarship presented by Manteo Rotary was awarded to Karyanna Culpepper, who is continuing her studies at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

The $1,000 Premiere Coastal Contracting and the $1,000 TW’s Bait & Tackle scholarships presented by Manteo Rotary went to Quinn Vanischak, who plans to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The $1,000 Midgett Insurance Agency Scholarship presented by Manteo Rotary was awarded to Oma Joy Daniels, who is attending the Rudy and Kelly Academy.

Keeli Xiao Harrison received the $1,000 Manteo Marine Scholarship presented by Manteo Rotary. She plans to attend Meredith College.

Lilly Rose Twiddy, who plans to attend East Carolina University, will receive $1,000 OBX Marina Scholarship presented by Manteo Rotary.

The inaugural Sonny Albarty Memorial Scholarship sponsored this year by Mossy Oak Properties NC Land and Farms for $1,000 was presented to Owen Clark, who is attending the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.

The $1,500 Jeanette U. McOwen Memorial Scholarship founded by William and Monica McOwen along with the $1,000 Scarborough Boatworks Scholarship was presented to Katie Nicole Thompson, who will attend College of The Albemarle. Her scholarships will be deferred until she transfers to a four year college or university.

Amber Mann, who will attend Chowan University, received the $5,000 Manteo Rotary Inshore Slam Scholarship.

In addition to scholarships granted this year, the club provided the initial funding for the Manteo Rotary Sonny Albarty Memorial Scholarship Endowment, which now amounts to more than $25,000.

Club grants and projects included the Nags Head Elementary School Global Read Aloud project, OBX Alzheimer’s Walk, Outer Banks Community Foundation Manteo Rotary Scholarship Endowment Fund, Coins for Alzheimer’s Research, Outer Banks Forever, Roanoke Island Food Pantry, Roanoke Island Women’s Club Thanksgiving Project, Dare County Arts Council, Dare County COVID-19 Vaccination Support, Friends of Jockey’s Ridge and service projects that recognized local hometown heroes – police, teachers, EMS, COA, Dare County Health Department and others. The club became the sponsor for the Roanoke Island Community Garden as an outreach project and conducted two service projects at the site.

Manteo Rotary funds scholarships and grants with proceeds from the annual Inshore Slam fishing tournament. This year’s tournament registration will be Friday, October 1 with fishing on Saturday, October 2. “We will dedicate this year’s tournament to Marc Basnight, a native son and public servant,” stated Manteo Rotary.
