Manteo JV soccer falls 4-1 in road game

The Manteo High School JV soccer team is now 1-1 overall after two early season road games.

Opening its schedule with a 9-0 non-conference away game win against Columbia September 2, the Redskins lost in another away non-conference game September 10 against Cape Henry Collegiate by a score of 4-1.

Although Manteo opened with a strong offensive attack, the home team Dolphins were the first to score about 10 minutes into the first half. Another goal eight minutes later followed by a successful penalty kick after another 10 minutes of play gave the home team a comfortable 3-0 lead. Cape Henry’s final score of the game came with just 4 minutes before the halftime break.

While goalkeeper Jonathan Hernandez snagged several Dolphin shots at Manteo’s net, a goal early in the second half by Alonzo Hernandez Torres helped the Redskins avoid a shutout.

“We were up against a well coached and well organized program,” said Manteo head coach Michael Goetsch following the game.

Goetsch added that even though his 12 players lost, he felt they played a strong game and held up well against a much larger team that could substitute freely.

“For an away game, and the travel, and going up against a school and facility like that we did very well,” he added.

Goetsch went on to say his team’s first half defensive organization was not exactly what he was looking for.

“They had some speed and had their breaks,” he continued, “so we made some adjustments on the fly, learning their system, and learning our positions. And only having one sub is always a challenge. Our second half was a lot better. I think they might have had their second string in some of the second half, and we were matched up better in the second half for sure.”

Goetsch went on to say even though it was a 4-1 loss, he felt he and his team learned a lot.

“This was a good non-conference test today, and we did score a goal,” he added.

Goetsch said also that Friday’s game should help Manteo be a bit more prepared and ready for their next game set for Wednesday, September 15, against First Flight.

“We are definitely looking forward to going up against First Flight,” he said.
