A photography exhibit, part of a Tide and Time project, opens Thursday, Sept. 16 at 9 a.m. at the Salvo Community Cemetery in the Salvo Day Use Area in the Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

The fence exhibit will be displayed daily through Nov. 16, 2021, from 9 a.m. until dark.

The Tide and Time fence exhibit is a free public photography exhibit which explores the effects of erosion and sea level rise on the Salvo Community Cemetery. Using scientific data, photographs and historical portraits of people interred at the cemetery, the exhibit guides visitors to better understand how climate change and human development are not only physically altering the Outer Banks, but also the locals’ psychological sense of home.

The work is a collaboration between Outer Banks locals and Justin Cook, a photographer and journalist based in Durham, and is part of his four-year photography and reporting project, Tide and Time, which recently published in The Coastal Review Online and is part of the Pulitzer Center’s nationwide Connected Coastlines reporting initiative.

The reporting project and fence exhibit have been made possible by the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting Connected Coastlines Initiative, The North Carolina Arts Council, the Photoville FENCE exhibit, The Coastal Review Online, and The National Park Service.
