A North Carolina man has been charged with child abuse after health care workers reported a 4-year-old child was brought to a hospital with a severe head injury, a sheriff’s office said Wednesday.

In a news release, the Carteret County Sheriff’s Office said Matthew David Langley, 31, of Newport, is charged with felony child abuse inflicting serious injury. Langley is jailed on a $150,000 bond. It’s not known if he has an attorney.

The news release says detectives responded to a hospital in Morehead City on Sunday after the child was taken there by emergency workers. Detectives learned the child is the daughter of Langley’s girlfriend and determined the child’s injuries didn’t match the story provided to investigators.
