As a celebration of National Recovery Month, on Oct. 1 at 4 p.m., the public is invited to join the Hyde County Health Department staff in walking the trail at the health department in Swan Quarter. Participants are asked to wear something purple, the official color of National Recovery Month.

Mental health and substance use disorders affect all communities nationwide. During the month of September, Recovery Month spreads the message that people can and do recover every day. The Recovery Month observance works to improve the lives of those affected by mental health and substance use disorders by raising awareness and educating communities about the effective services that are available.

Those interested in information regarding recovery treatment options, AA, NA or Al-Anon, can call or text 252-422-2936.

This year’s theme for Recovery Month is “Recovery is for Everyone: Every Person, Every Family, Every Community.”

Additionally, Hyde County Heath Department staff members have created a scavenger hunt.

For Hyde County employees, small items with recovery themes written on them are scattered around county offices. Each county department is being asked to find one item, take a picture representing the department and send it to aschafer@hydecountync.gov so it can be shared on the Hyde County Health Department Facebook page.

For community members, in Engelhard, Fairfield, Lake Landing, Scranton, Swan Quarter, and Ocracoke, there is one item with a recovery theme written on it. When it is located, take a photo with the item found and send to aschafer@hydecountync.gov or call or text Mike Wheeler at 252-422-2936 to make arrangements to have the discovery captured in a photo and posted on the health department’s website.
