The Dare County Library has announced that it is now collecting canned goods and other non-perishable food items to distribute to local Outer Banks food pantries throughout the month of October.

Last fall, in response to the unprecedented demand that local food banks were striving to meet during 2020, the Dare County Library’s locations each acted as a drop-off point to make it convenient for patrons who were using curbside library services to also donate canned goods and non-perishable food items.

According to the Dare County Library, the public’s response to the food pantry drive that was held in October 2020 was “tremendous” and inspired staff members to once again allow the three locations to serve as drop-off points for those who would like to donate items this season.

From now through the end of October 2021, individuals can drop off canned and non-perishable food items at any of the three Dare County Library locations during regular hours of operation.

Library staff members will then forward all donated items to the Roanoke Island Food Pantry, the Hatteras Island Food Pantry and the Beach Food Pantry, depending upon the library location at which the items were donated.

Dare County Library locations have reopened to provide limited indoor library service. Face coverings are required to enter all Dare County facilities, regardless of an individual’s COVID-19 vaccination status. Curbside pickup service is also available.
